Many people are pretty convinced that the FDA is the end all be all for ensuring that our food and other products are safe; well, I am here to tell you that they are not doing such a great job. Ladies, just because the ingredients in your products are plastered on a label does not make it good for you; we have to be very mindful of what we are putting into our bodies ~ yes, when using skin and hair products we are putting chemicals and other toxins into our bodies through absorption!
Cosmetic and personal care products are just as hazardous to our health as much of the food we ingest! There are thousands of chemicals being put into our products, much of which is being added without government review or approval. A number of the chemicals being used are skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters and are carcinogenic (toxins, cancer causing)!

Although there are thousands of chemicals that are used, here are some of the most common:
- Fragrance ~ a term used to describe over 3,000 chemical ingredients.Companies do not have to disclose what ingredients make up their product’s “fragrance” because the term is protected by federal law (under trade secrets). Many chemicals listed as fragrance are known hormone disruptors and allergens. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Database, fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.
- Synthetic colors ~ FD&C or D&C represent artificial colors. ‘F’ represents food and D&C represents drug and cosmetics. These letters precede a color and number (e.g., D&C Red 27 or FD&C blue 1). These synthetic colors are derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. Synthetic colors are suspected to be a human carcinogen, a skin irritant and are linked to ADHD in children. The European Classification and Labeling considers it a human carcinogen and the European Union has banned it.
- Phthalates ~ a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. The main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in lotions and other products, and dimethyl phthalate is found in hair spray. They are known to be endocrine disruptors and have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, early breast development in girls, and reproductive birth defects in males and females. Unfortunately, it is not disclosed on every product as it's added to fragrances (remember the "secret formula" not listed). They can be found in deodorants, perfumes/colognes, hair sprays and moisturizers.
- Parabens (methyl-, isobutyl-, and more) ~ preservatives added to body lotion to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. Parabens are endocrine (or hormone) disruptors, meaning they alter important hormone mechanisms in the body. Specifically, parabens mimic estrogen.Parabens can lock on to the cell’s own estrogen receptors and disrupt cellular communication.Parabens may play a role in triggering breast cancer.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)/Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) ~ can be found in more than 90% of personal care and cleaning products, particularly in products that foam. SLS's are known to be skin, lung, and eye irritants. A major concern about SLS is if it were to interact and combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, a carcinogen it can lead to a host of other issues like kidney and respiratory damage. They can be found in shampoo, body wash/cleanser, mascara and acne treatment.
- Propylene glycol (PEG compounds) ~ a small organic alcohol used to make lotions and skin conditioning agents thicker, softer and better able to carry moisture to the skin. Unfortunately, depending on the manufacturing process, PEG compounds are often contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1, 4-dioxane, both of which are carcinogens. Has been associated with causing dermatitis as well as hives in humans.
- Formaldehyde ~ formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRP's) preservatives are used in many cosmetic products to help prevent bacteria growth. This chemical was deemed as a human carcinogen by The International Agency for Research on Carcinogens (IARC) and has been linked to occupational related cancers: nasal and nasopharyngeal. It is known to cause allergic skin reactions and it may also be harmful to the immune system. It can be found in nail polish, body washes, conditioners, shampoos, cleansers, eye shadows, nail polish treatments.
- Toluene ~ a petrochemical derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. You may see it on labels listed as benzene, toluol, phenylmethane, methylbenzene. Toluene is a potent solvent able to dissolve paint and paint thinner. It can affect your respiratory system, cause nausea and irritate your skin. Expecting mothers should avoid exposure to toluene vapors as it may cause developmental damage in the fetus. Toluene has also been linked to immune system toxicity. It can be found in nail polish, nail treatments and hair color/bleaching products.
- BHA and BHT – these chemicals are put into lotion to extend the shelf life of a product. However, these chemicals are probable carcinogens, hormone disruptors and they may even cause liver damage.
- Mineral oils – a byproduct of petroleum distillation and is frequently put in baby lotion. Mineral oil can cause a red, itchy rash when it comes into contact with the skin.
- Sunscreen chemicals ~ the chemicals function as a sunscreen agent, to absorb ultraviolet light are endocrine disruptors and are believed to be easily absorbed into the body. They may cause cellular damage and cancer. Common names are benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone, homosalate and ethoxycinnmate. They can be found in sunscreen products.
